The Markay Cultural Arts Center was decked out in all its glory Sunday, May 20, 2012 for the Homecoming Celebration in honor of the 1940 bas-relief sculptures. While the Markay was built in 1930 by local folks, it was sold to the national Chekeres chain in 1940. Mr. Chekeres himself arrived one day with Indianapolis artist Frank Boerder in tow to see just how to put his own stamp on the theatre. Of course, it had to be done in such a way that commerce would not be interrupted. The sculptures, which reflect live in Jackson County at that time, were the main feature of the renovation. When Southern Hills arrived on the scene in the fall of 1996, these sculptures were in deplorable condition. They were expertly restored by Laurie Booth and had been in climate-controlled storage for years. When Laurie decided to close her business, Council members scurried about to prepare for their return. The concrete floor received a dye coat and was highly polished. The acoustical panels and paint were applied to the walls. The pilasters that mask cross-lighting towers were installed. The bas-reliefs could come home. We partied our hearts out May 20. Many thanks to Dr. Richard Syracuse for rearranging his schedule to entertain at the piano. Thanks also go to the legion of cookie bakers who created more taste tempting treats than we could eat all in one day. President Maxine Plummer and all Board members thank everyone who came to share in their joy. They extend a cordial invitation to all who were unable to come Sunday to drop in Wednesday through Friday from Noon to 5 p.m. or weekends from 1 to 3 p.m. |
